美国头号影视租赁连锁店Blockbuster计划从下个月开始拓展高清电影租赁服务，在旗下1450家商店全面展开新服务，不过摆上货架的将基本都是蓝光格式的影碟。

从去年底开始，Blockbuster的250家商店就已经在实验性地同时租赁蓝光和HD DVD影碟，不过统计发现，70％的时候顾客都选择了蓝光，因此Blockbuster决定“顺应民意”，今后全面提供蓝光影碟，HD DVD影碟则仅限原有的250家商店和在线交易，不会扩大规模。

Blockbuster营销业务高级副总裁Matthew Smith表示：“消费者在给我们发信号。我不能视而不见。如果你走进一家商店，就会看见所有的电影都推出了蓝光格式，但HD DVD电影很匮乏。”

Blockbuster的这一举措也与好莱坞不谋而合。目前只有通用电气旗下的环球专心支持HD DVD，华纳兄弟、派拉蒙等绝大多数电影商都同时支持两种格式，另外迪斯尼等只发行蓝光高清电影。

显然，如果其他零售商和租赁商也与Blockbuster一样专营蓝光，无疑会对HD DVD的发展带来巨大冲击，高清格式之争也有望很快分出高低。

北美HD DVD推广集团很快做出回应，指责Blockbuster目光短浅，被蓝光电影最初三个月的成功所迷惑，而没有看到HD DVD随后的崛起，比如在影碟机和《黑客帝国》等一些流行电影方面，HD DVD格式的销量非常好。

该集团联合总裁Ken Graffeo称：“我认为，这么短的时间就做出这种决定，根本无法反映消费者的真正需求。”

June 18, 2007 - Blockbuster Video announced today that it has chosen Blu-ray as its exclusive next-gen-DVD format for placement in the company's 1,450 video rental stores when high-definition offerings are rolled out nationwide in July. The decision follows a roughly six-month test period in which both formats were offered in 250 pilot stores. According to Blockbuster, customers chose to rent Blu-ray movies more than 70% of the time.

Blockbuster's senior vice president of merchandizing, Matthew Smith, spoke firmly on the decision in an interview with the Associated Press, "The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing." The HD-DVD Promotions Group has decried the announcement, suggesting that the trial period was far too short, and also not representative of the format's recent boosts from hardware discounts and strong exclusives like The Matrix trilogy.

The news is certainly a win for the Blu-ray camp, though the true weight it carries remains to be seen. HD-DVD fans must now turn to NetFlix, which has supported both formats since launch.
