FlatpanelsHD had an opportunity to get up close with LG Display's roll-down OLED display. It is incredible but remains a concept for now. The roll-up OLED will launch this year.
Rollable OLED TVs
It is no longer science fiction. Two years ago, LG Display unveiled its first rollable OLED display and LG Electronics is planning to launch it as a consumer product this year. The 65-inch RX OLED TV will cost around $60,000 but we guess you have to start somewhere.
At CES 2020, LG showcased a new version that descends from above. The roll-down OLED display measures 65 inches so it is not a direct replacement for a projector just yet, but you can see the potential here. Of course, LG will need to bring down costs drastically.
During a closed session, FlatpanelsHD had an opportunity to examine the screen a little closer. In the video below you can see how LG Display has achieved the feat. It is possible because an OLED display consists of a single and very thin layer, which preserves picture quality even in rollable form. OLED is also what enables foldable smartphones.
At its booth, LG Electronics had installed multiple roll-down RX OLED TV as part of a bigger showcase. Here, it had flipped its RX on its head for the roll-down effect.
