EA CEO Doesn't Think Wii U is a 'Next Gen' Console

John Riccitiello, CEO of EA, recently held a call with investors to reassure them that despite a bad year, there will still be a market for big AAA games, particularly when the next generation of consoles are released.
Meaning, that hasn’t happened yet.
If that sounds like a slight to the Wii U, well, it kind of is. Though Riccitiello makes sure to soften the blow.
“
“Never count Nintendo out. They’ve got some of the best IP in the game industry. When their marquee titles show up, that’s when you usually see the bounce. I deeply respect the achievements they’ve had over the last several years. And as I said, you never really count them out.”
Go on…
“
“Having said that, I wouldn’t say that we see a correlation between the results that Nintendo has shown with their console debut of the Wii U and what we see coming. We see a pretty sharp distinction, and unfortunately I’m unable to go any further than that.
Ours is an industry where a lot of devices come in and represent themselves as the next generation, or the next generation after that. In many ways we would argue that the what we’re describing as “gen 4″ is yet to come. It’s that that we’re excited about, and that’s what we’re investing in. And frankly, we’ve been quite consistent with that for some time, while recognizing the frustration our inability to articulate precisely why causes for you.”
What he’s essentially saying here is that he’s seen what the Wii U is capable, of, and he’s seen what the upcoming versions of the Playstation and Xbox are capable of, and the gulf is sizable enough that we’ll be classifying the Wii U as “last gen” once the other two are released.
He also talked about how EA will be focusing hard on “gen 4″ versions of Battlefield and FIFA, saying that they’ll be investing a lot into games for the PS4 and 720 (or Durango and Orbis if you prefer). Not to say the Wii U won’t see any EA games. It already has Mass Effect 3 out for the system and we’ll likely see a number of the traditional sports titles that are generally released to every platform under the sun. But it doesn’t appear that the WiiU is a big part of EA’s comeback strategy.
This is what I was warning about during my “Six Reasons the Wii U is Struggling” article from last week. I said that many are waiting to see what the total scope of the next generation will look like, which means realizing what the Durango and Orbis are capable of.
The fear is that though the Wii U appears to have much more 3rd party support right now than its predecessor, that’s not necessarily going to be the case down the line. Yes, it’s nice that the system can now run titles like Arkham City and Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect when it couldn’t before, but how long will that last?
It’s already starting. Eidos says they won’t release their new Tomb Raider for the Wii U because of the added complication of the gamepad, and Randy Pitchford said something similar about Borderlands 2, which couldn’t be bothered to be ported for the system.
And down the line, EA may have been willing to release Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U, but what about Mass Effect 4, a game assuredly designed for fully “ gen 4″ systems? Because of the Wii U’s capabilities, Nintendo will be back where they started where developers don’t want to strip down their game, or add-in extraneous features to make use of the gamepad, which is exactly what happened with the Wii.
Of course, the Wii was a smash hit regardless of lackluster 3rd party support, but as I said previously, I don’t think the Wii U can count on being the same sort of phenomenon among non-gamers.
The perfect scenario for Nintendo would have been a system that includes all their beloved first party franchises, but also one that can play any number of popular cross platform titles. Though it might be able to be that sort of system right now, once fully “next gen” games are released, I think the Wii U will be left behind by 3rd party developers and Riccitiello’s comments are a sign of what’s to come for the console.
