New York isn't proud to host GTA4? But it isn't even New York!
J. Micah Grunert - Monday, April 2nd, 2007 | 2:50PM (PST)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg doesn't like how Vice City is a little to close to New York City.

This is going to sound stupid, but what I'm about to say makes sense. All of those super-conservative folks who have nothing better to do than complain about video games should sit down and collectively take a gigantic chill pill, or what ever they can find to help them relax their rear ends.

It all stems from the latest (yet to be released) installment of the Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto franchise. It's a great series! I still remember playing the old top down version on my slow as snot x486 rig some years ago. I think Rockstar still offers these two early top down versions of GTA for free download. I should check later. But though GTA4 won't be released until fall of this year, its debut trailer is coming under fire by disgruntled NY City officials, due mostly in part to the similarities between the imaginary Liberty City and the real world New York City.

"The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers," New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement.

It's just a game Mike! Humans have indulged their imaginations for centuries, wondering what it would be like to lay waste to countless hordes of seemingly innocent bystanders, or an on rushing wave of blood thirsty, flesh eating zombies. Mental note: Sharpen up my Samurai sword, gas up the chain saw and buy an aluminum baseball bat, just the dead do start to rise from their graves. They'll probably be in a bad mood, I know I would be if my eternal sleep was disturbed. Sure, killing virtual citizens with a stolen car and mowing a rushing swam of cops with a mini-gun is a little disturbing, but it's not real. Those digital characters are just a collection of bits and bytes, not living-breathing human beings with lives and families.

Raymond Kelly, the real life New York City police commissioner had also said that it doesn't care where the game is set. "It's despicable to glamorize violence in games like these, regardless of how far-fetched the setting may be,"

Though the Liberty City setting for GTA4 is fictional, there are a number of digital landmarks that bear striking resemblance to real New York City sights. The Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and Wall Street to name a few. Coincidentally, Rockstar games is head quartered in New York. It only makes sense that they would uses their home town for inspiration. In the past, other first-person GTA titles have rung true to other major US cities. GTA Vice City took place in a virtual Miami, picking up on the popularity of the 1980's television show 'Miami Vice'. GTA San Andreas had its title character roaming and rampaging about a virtual Los Angles and Las Vegas, and some hints of San Francisco. Now that was a fun game.

You know, it's pretty typical for game developers to model their wares after real world locations. In fact, tell me, does Europe get ticked of with 'Call of Duty', it is set in war time Europe.

Well, regardless of what some people may think or say, GTA4 will probably be another hot seller. And if you're interested, you can view the official trailer here. The graphics look great, though not the best that todays technology can offer, I certain though that the game play absolutely rocks!
