May 17, 2007 - Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas was originally announced as a launch-window title for the PlayStation 3, and yet delay after delay pushed back its release until what now looks like it'll be sometime soon (hopefully). We had a chance to pick up the controls of the PS3 version for the first time yesterday in San Diego at Sony's Gamer's Day, though unfortunately it looks as if the development must have been spent on fixing bugs and optimization as opposed to adding new content as what we saw was largely the same as the Xbox 360 and PC games.

The first difference that we noticed is that textures aren't quite as sharp as what we remember seeing on the Xbox 360 game. While some stuff is fine, another texture close by will be of a much lower resolution, resulting in a disjointed look to some of the environments. And as this is a game where you constantly use cover and therefore get close-up looks at walls all the time, there aren't many things that can be classified as "small" details. Fortunately though, the game did run quite well and we didn't notice any significant slowdown in our time with it.

The other small difference we noticed is that the controls feel a bit looser on the PS3 game rather than the 360 version, though this is true for a lot of shooters simply because of the controllers. Aiming was precise, though it didn't feel like there was the same amount of acceleration going on as there is in the 360 game. Still though, it was by no means broken and played quite well.

So while it looks like PlayStation fans will just be getting the same title that Xbox 360 gamers have had for more than six months now, Rainbow Six: Vegas is still one hell of a game and we're looking forward to getting wrapped up in it again.

Guillemot said Ubisoft plans to deliver an exclusive PS3 title in Europe but declined to reveal the name. Gamers have complained that there is not yet a must-have game available only on the PS3 and Sony has promised to deliver this year.
