纳斯达克上市的Research in Motion (RIMM)涨11.15美元,至124.53美元,涨幅9.8%,创收盘新高。该股尾盘飙升,受有关该公司在中国获得黑莓(BlackBerry)无线设备销售合同消息的提振。这家便携通讯设备制造商表示,已与阿尔卡特朗讯(Alcatel-Lucent, ALU)签订在华分销黑莓的合同。后者的美国存托凭证涨43美分,至9.55美元,涨幅4.7%。
Research In Motion rimm will sell its popular BlackBerry smart phone in China after announcing a deal Tuesday to enter the world's largest cell phone market.
RIM's shares surged 10% on the news to a new high of 124.53.
The Nasdaq roared after RIM's 2p.m. EDT announcement. It rallied 1.6% to end at its session high. The S&P 500 rose 0.9%.
Alcatel-Lucent alu will start distributing RIM's smart phones later this year. China Mobile chl will be the service provider.
RIM has made "significant progress in the past three years" in China, said co-CEO Jim Balsillie in its Oct. 4 quarterly earnings call.
BlackBerry phones have worked with China Mobile since last year. But people couldn't buy them in the country.
The deal with Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) gives it a direct line.
"With business booming in China and with it adding more (cellular) infrastructure, that presents a huge opportunity for RIM," said Jack Gold, research analyst with J. Gold Associates.
China Mobile alone boasts 350 million customers, adding 48.4 million in the first nine months of the year. Many of those users rely on low-end handsets, however.
China's Getting Smart
But 5.4 million smart phones were sold in China in the first half of 2007, said research firm IDC.
Gold estimates that more than 100 million BlackBerry-like devices will be sold in China between now and 2010 to the high-income customers that RIM appeals to. Add the middle class and that could swell to 500 million.
"Every cell phone maker is trying to break into that market, including Motorola (NYSE:MEU) (NYSE:MOT) mot, Samsung, LG and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) nok, and there are a lot of home-grown competitors," Gold said. "But RIM has a monster reputation in the world for being a first-class product. Even if they get just 2%, that's huge for them."
RIM on Tuesday shipped its first smart phones to Chinese distribution networks. BlackBerry devices should go on sale this year, starting with the 2-year-old 8700 line.
TCL Communications, a mobile device maker in China that holds the Alcatel brand for handsets, will be a manufacturing partner.
Alcatel and RIM have previously teamed up to sell the BlackBerry in Algeria and Ukraine.
BlackBerry's China success will partly depend on how enamored customers are with mobile e-mail, said Rob Sanderson, analyst at American Technology Research.
"There's no enterprise-grade e-mail solutions entrenched in the Chinese market right now," Sanderson said.
"It's still very early in terms of market development for RIM, but the steps they're taking now is the foundation for what they need to put in place," he added. "When RIM moves into a new market it can take them two or three years before we see an inflection point."
Among the challenges for RIM, said independent research analyst Todd Kort, is that Chinese characters don't work as well with small keyboards as the English alphabet does.
"Every Western company faces this problem," said Kort, "but especially RIM because the base device of its keyboard is to develop one that's appropriate for e-mail. It's obvious that something will have to be compromised. I'm not expecting RIM to be as popular in China or even Japan as they are in the U.S."
RIM has been on a roll, with its shares tripling this year. Strong demand for its BlackBerry lineup fueled a 108% sales jump to $1.37 billion in its third quarter.
