Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), President and
COO Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai proudly announced the end of the
console wars at the company's E3 press conference, held on
May 22, 2002 at the LA Convention Center in Los Angeles,
California. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has shiped over
30 million PlayStation®2 worldwide (see chart below) since the

product's inception - more than seven and a half times as many as the nearest competing next-
generation game console. The company expects to ship another 20+ million units during its 2003
fiscal year and global output has stabilized at around 2 million units a month. According to Kaz,
the competitive game is widening and today looks, "more like the Grand Canyon than Silicon
Valley."
