Need for Speed Carbon

PS3:7.9
8.0 Presentation
Great cutscenes and plenty of visual flair in the menus.
7.0 Graphics
Cars are very nicely detailed, but some of the filters, specifically the blurring, looks poor on the system.
9.0 Sound
Nice soundtrack and fantastic engine effects. Great use of surround sound.
7.5 Gameplay
The same racing engine we've been playing for years. Drifting is reasonable fun, the Canyon races are cool and it's nicely accessible.
7.5 Lasting Appeal
Plenty of challenges for the career mode and fairly standard online support.

XO:8.2
8.0 Presentation
More trippy-dippy FMV-treated cutscenes and sadly, more cutscenes filled with geekier FMV actors. A great map system, good GPS, and good progression structure.
8.5 Graphics
EA returns the series to the flashy streets of the city, like in Underground 1 and 2. Great looking cars made better by Autosculpt.
9.0 Sound
Great sound effects nicely split in 5.1 plus the least obnoxious EA TRAX songs ever.
8.0 Gameplay
The muscle cars are the biggest change the series has seen in years. The canyon duels are OK (kinda easy actually). The non-career mode mini-races are startlingly deep.
8.5 Lasting Appeal
Mucho replay value: There is the meaty 12-hour career mode, the four-person co-op mode (split-screen or online), and the eight-person cop races, which are great (if you have a good connection).

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07

PS3:8.3

8.0 Presentation
Most of the features and content of yesteryear are back. Nice PGA Tour mode, and Game Face is excellent as always.
7.5 Graphics
Players are somewhat cartoony but they look great. Grass and whatnot looks better up close than from afar.
7.0 Sound
Decent commentary and reasonable soundtrack go along with the ping of golf balls. Basic but decent.
8.5 Gameplay
True Aiming is a sweet new change for the series. Tiger hasn't been this fun in a while.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Like the real sport, you could spend hours perfecting your game.

XO:8.5
8.0 Presentation
Tiger has been completely cleaned up, with a streamlined menu system and great atmosphere. There are only 12 courses, but a robust career mode adds tremendous value. This feels like next-gen golf.
8.5 Graphics
Tiger looks amazing thanks to UCAP. Everyone else looks great, except the alcoholic truck driver you created in Game Face. The courses and scenery are gorgeous, a great walk in the park.
7.0 Sound
Recycled from years passed. A nice ambient soundtrack, but the crowds and commentary from 2004 make the game feel old when it should feel new.
9.0 Gameplay
Finally, course management. True Aiming is such a sweet, simple solution you wonder why EA didn't think of it before. And after hours on the range, you'll shoot a 63, just like the old days.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Daily tournaments online are a great idea and build community on the leaderboards. And thanks to the PGA for creating the FedEx Cup. Winning the title feels like winning the Super Bowl in Madden.

NHL 2K7

PS3:8.6

8.0 Presentation
Fantastic franchise mode, but the menu system needs an update and only four player support is a little disappointing.
7.0 Graphics
The ice and animations look fantastic, but player textures look a little flat.
8.0 Sound
Great sound effects are coupled with an OK soundtrack and very nice commentary.
9.0 Gameplay
Excellent if not perfect controls, great use of the SIXAXIS and just a fantastic play experience. Defense and goalkeeping is a little protective to keep things even, though.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Awesome franchise mode will keep you hooked, and online is always great fun.

XO:8.9

9.5 Presentation
Other than ugly menus from last year, this game has everything. Skybox, Cinemotion, classic and international teams, mini-games, pond-hockey, deep franchise mode and the best online options in sports.
9.0 Graphics
Superb animations and frame-rate, NHL 2K7 never slows down. The player models look great, especially on their back after a big hit.
7.5 Sound
The cinematic score is a great idea that needs to get louder to pull you in. The commentary is decent if you turn it on. Improved crowd noise could have really juiced up the atmosphere.
8.5 Gameplay
The one-timer is still a bit of an issue, but great AI on offense and defense, spot-on puck physics and a next-gen skating engine make for a great hockey experience.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
The game modes seem endless, and you'll spend hours unlocking classic teams. The Franchise mode is improved with rivalries and chemistry. The online options are the best in the business.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

PS3:7.9

7.5 Presentation
User-friendly menus and perfectly acceptable load times complement a classic "Save the World" storyline.
6.5 Graphics
The environments look great, but there's still pop-in, moderate framerate hiccups, and a sea of last-gen character models that have been animated in a ho-hum way. 1080p looks better.
6.5 Sound
Occasionally a good voice actor comes out of the wood work, but for the most part, the speech here is pretty bad. The soundtrack is straight out of an action movie.
8.0 Gameplay
A really solid combat system and cool multiplayer features are made better by the use of super powers and fun boss fight mini-games. Now if only half those powers were more useful...
8.0 Lasting Appeal
This 20-30 hour adventure has more than 20 playable characters, plenty of hidden goodies, and online co-op.

XO:8.2

8.0 Presentation
With more than 140 Marvel characters, this is the most robust comic-book game to date. A solid story and cool alternate costumes are welcome additions to the button-mashing fun.
7.5 Graphics
From afar it looks gorgeous, particularly the environments. While things get a little uglier on closer inspection, it's hard to deny the shiny splendor of MUA in motion.
7.0 Sound
The voice acting is average and the one-liners far too few for a 20-hour game. The wonderful score saves this from mediocrity.
8.0 Gameplay
Addictive button-mashing mixed with some God of War-style boss battles. The puzzles and level design are tired, but that does little to detract from the joy of cracking Skrulls.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
It should take about 20 hours to play through the first time, but thanks to the depth of customization and number of characters, there is plenty of incentive to give this a second play through.

TOP

TOP

TOP

TOP

TOP

TOP
